The paper reads the fundamentalist Christian Left Behind novels as examples of the figural interpretation of history developed in the patristic period; their apocalyptic vision of history recapitulates the centrality of violence to the sacred in general, and has particular consequences for the American polity, where such doctrines have become embedded in mainstream political discourse. The paper draws a parallel between this apocalyptic vision and other forms of political thought predicated on an absolute and ruptural event.en
