This book is an experiment in teaching, and the tardy fulfilment of a promise. It consists wholly of corrected and annotated extracts from essays written by students of the University of Sydney. Pages of similar comments were posted term after term, and year after year, on the notice boards of the Department of French; and the day came when I undertook, all too bravely, to print a bookful: it was thought that a comprehensive and fully indexed course of these simple demonstrations, well within the range of pupils in the upper forms of schools, would bring manifold comfort both to the learner and to the teacher; studied systematically it would spare the learner endless groping in the dark, furnish him with indispensable knowledge not easily obtained elsewhere, an equipment often not compassed by years of note-taking; used as a reference book it would relieve the teacher of much laborious instruction and explanation. "Thinking French: An introduction to the structure and clarity of French sentence, In the form of comments on corrected extracts from students' essays" was originally published as a part of Sydney Electronic Text and Image Service (SETIS), Faculty Projects collection, Thinking in French 2002 (https://digital.library.sydney.edu.au/pages/setis)en
