See moreThe objective of this paper is to highlight the environmental impacts associated with the provision of transport services necessary for the movement of passengers and goods. The management of the transport sector requires trade-offs to be made between three major goals of transport management - growth, equity and environmental sustainability. To place the discussion on ways of reducing the environmental impacts of transport activity in context, we review international trends in emissions of the major noxious air pollutants, and then take a close look at policy instruments which might contribute to reducing the impact that transport services have on the quality of the environment.
