This paper evaluates the debate in the literature on the extent to which a concern for egalitarianism has been a feature of Australia's wage-fixing system during the current century. An alternative interpretation of the historical record is proposed, along with an alternative concept of egalitarianism. A new conclusion about the degree of concern for egalitarianism follows.en
