On a first look through this textbook, this reviewer was reminded of a saying along the following lines: 'What is new about this book is not good; what is good about this book is not new'. It has been attributed variously to Lord Brougham, Samuel Johnson, and Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, and … reviewers of Charles Darwin's main work on the theory of evolution - a salutary warning that the work of others may hold more of enduring value than seems initially to be the case! Indeed, on further reflection, it would be too harsh to apply the saying to the textbook introduced here. A fairer conclusion is: 'What is new about this book is an interesting and worthwhile first attempt; the bulk of the work is a useful new resource for what appears to be its main intended audience'.en_AU
