This thesis explores the relationships among chemistry, structure and properties of several perovskite-derived oxides. Many of the compounds were chosen on the basis of inherent oxygen vacancies, making them candidates as potential solid-state proton and oxide ion conductors. Their structures were then systematically studied in detail using a combination of high resolution diffraction, spectroscopy and ab initio calculations. This thesis explores the relationships among chemistry, structure and properties of several perovskite-derived oxides.
