The old adage ‘a rising tides lifts all boats’ only works for those who have a boat. In view of the ever-accelerating global and national social divide, it is timely to explore the role of academia in mounting an effective response to poverty and homelessness. The seminar will i) present a myths and-misconceptions-free picture of poverty and homelessness and causes and sequellae in an Australian big city context, and ii) explore ways in which academics, either collectively or as individuals, might contribute to solutions eg through research, teaching/learning, and community engagement. The old adage ‘a rising tides lifts all boats’ only works for those who have a boat.
