The Iberia suite for solo piano, composed by one of Spain’s most illustrious nationalist composers, Isaac Albéniz, is without doubt his masterpiece and perhaps one of the greatest works ever written for the instrument. Iberia is a collection comprising twelve pieces, in which Albéniz incorporates many characteristics from traditional folk songs and dances, which gives each of the works a distinctive Spanish flavour. The Spanish idiom is always colourful, vivid, and often evocative with unique rhythms and scale patterns that reflect traditional dance forms and genres, particularly flamenco. Appropriate interpretation of these works is critical and requires a deep understanding of the stylistic qualities associated with the Spanish idiom in order to execute an effective and authentic performance. This thesis explores the influence of traditional Spanish folk idioms in Albéniz's Iberia suite and offers insight into how to interpret and perform these works in a stylistically appropriate and convincing manner, with respect to musical aspects such as articulation, rhythmic control and flexibility, tone colour, phrasing, dynamic range and pedalling. In a thorough analysis of a selection of works from the suite, suggestions are offered by the author on technical aspects, sound and colour production, rhythmical aspects, rubato, articulation and pedalling, producing a significant performance compendium for the pianist wishing to perform Iberia.en_AU
