Povlačenje Kuća (Aged Care Living) Undertaking a contemporary building in a historic and architecturally monothematic city presents three paths: rebel, conform, or mediate. I have attempted to mediate; fulfilling my program in a modern way, meaning the building breaks from tradition wholeheartedly in function, yet only subtly aesthetically. Ultimately I believe the building is able to relate to its context as effectively as its residents will feel included in it. Brief: Create a functional, modern and desirable environment for the provision of aged care within the Old Town, addressing Croatia’s ageing population. Parti: To marry the Centre with the uniformity of existing structures, traditional styles have been integrated with highly contemporary ones. A glass and steel circulation and air ventilation tower (blue) separates two stone living quarters. The roof over the living areas references local terracotta tiles, scaled up and covered with aluminium sheet. This both contrasts and complements existing roof textures and maintains their sense of rhythm and repetition. Over the lane another traditional stone building is topped with a pool and sun deck. Structure: Traditional stonewalls on the exterior work symbiotically with by modern concrete columns and floors inside, allowing higher ceilings with greater floor areas than purely traditional techniques.en_AU
