See moreGrowth hormone has been reported to produce a wide variety of seemingly unrelated metabolic effects on adipose tissue. when the hormone is injected into the intact animal there is prompt mobilization oF adipose tissue stores with a concomitant increase in the level of circulating plasma Free Fatty acids. In contrast to these in vivo Findings, in vitro studies using physiological concentrations oF growth hormone have frequently failed to demonstrate a lipolytic effect. The present study was undertaken to assess the characteristics oF the action oF growth hormone on various metabolic parameters in adipose tissue, and to examine the relationship oF hormone-activated lipolysis to changes in glucose and Fatty acid metabolism. Due to the similarities between growth hormone and human placental lactogen ( a placental peptide circulating in maternal plasma during pregnancy ), the metabolic eFFects oF this latter peptide were also examined.
