Supporting shared decision making SDM about cardiovascular CVD prevention in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Communities in Australia

Abstract

This paper looks at Shared Decision Making (SDM) with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Cardio Vascular Disease (CVD). Yarning method was utilized to receive information from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers/Practitioners on CVD in their personal and professional spaces in forms of workshops and individual yarning sessions. The research showed the importance of utilizing culturally appropriate knowledge and resources such as identified positions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers/Health Practitioners in the screening, health promotion and screening tools to provide a holistic and culturally safe environment of support of CVD and shared decision making.
