See moreDue to superior physical qualities, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has become a prominent biomaterial for ligament/tendon (L/T) implants. There has been interest in addressing UHMWPE's bio-inert shortcomings by using bioactive components like hydroxyapatite, either as composite fillers or as a surface coating. In this thesis, as an alternative strategy, we explored the application of Plasma Immersion Ion Implantation (PIII) as a surface treatment for UHMWPE to enhance bioactivity by altering its surface properties and to offer a practical method for covalently immobilizing biomolecules on the surfaces of UHMWPE fabric.
