It was my intention, when first contemplating this thesis, to study the domestic architecture of every country of the world, pointing out particularly those features everywhere which, owing to similarity of various conditions, could be introduced in our own land. But the task proved to be too great, so I have chosen only those countries whose domestic work as a whole is most adaptable here- that is, Spain, Italy and the America of the early days , and, of course, Australia itself. To these, I have added two others to show that even in the most unexpected places we often find some adaptable features- Egypt, as typical of the ancient world, and China, as typical of Oriental civilisation.en
