Low back pain is a problem that has plagued (and still plagues) industrialized western society. Investigators in Great Britain, Scandinavia, Japan and North America emphasize the high incidence of the complaint, (Hult, 1954; Dillane et al, 1966; Ward, 1969; Hirsch et al, 1969; Horal, 1969; Rowe, 1969; Gyntelberg, 1974; Hasue and Fujimara, 1979; Macnab, 1979; Frymoyer et a1, 1980; Calin et a1, 1980; Kelsey and White, 1980). In these highly developed countries it would appear that 50-75% of the population have experienced low back pain at some time.en
