This study seeks to shed light on the impetus behind the development of the distinctive ringed form of the early Irish High Cross. This will be achieved through an investigation of the High Crosses from within the wider tradition of early medieval standing stones. It is proposed that High Crosses represent a communication innovation which was tailored for an Irish audience. From this perspective, the crosses’ discourse as media within a communication system will be explored. This will involve an examination of: the cross form as a medium choice; identification and goals of their creators; the audience and their requirements; issues relating to the communication and interpretation of their messages; and considerations of the socio-cultural context in which we find them employed This investigation of the crosses as medium centres on exploration of the early Irish Christian goal to orientate Irish society within the Christian cosmos. The result of this investigation will provide an explanation for the continued development and evolution of the High Crosses as medium, and an answer to the question: Why build an Irish High Cross?en
