This study had two primary objectives:- (1) To examine the Theory of Rating Scale method, and to review previous attempts to measure Character and Personality by means of Judgments by Acquaintances, and Self-Judgments. (2) To construct a Rating Scale and examine its validity and possibilities by analysing the Data obtained by an experiment with the Scale, and to suggest modifications in the Scale as a result of the inquiry. A very detailed examination, the results of which follow, was made of those scientific investigations which have examined judgments of character and personality, and into the theory of Rating Scale construction and application. An endeavour has been made to present the most important information resulting from this inquiry. The experimental work with a Rating Scale is then reviewed. It is difficult to express the deep obligation of the writer to Dr. Martin, who supervised the work, and whose frank and constructive criticism, and most valuable guidance, have proved of the utmost assistance throughout the experiment.en_AU
