There is also a history and bibliography of published and unpublished geological work on the Great Barrier Reef that was compiled during the present investigations. The Great Barrier Reef developed on the eastern Queensland continental shelf in the period of Post-Pleistocene sea level movements. The material that contributes to the sedimentary patterns in the Province comes from two sources; a terrigenous influx from the west and a carbonate provenance in the east.
