Effect of integrating digital breast tomosynthesis (3D-mammography) with acquired or synthetic 2D-mammography on radiologists’ true-positive and false-positive detection in a population screening trial: A descriptive study

Bernardi, Daniela; Li, Tong; Pellegrini, Macro; Macaskill, Petra; Valentini, Marvi; Fanto, Carmine; Ostillio, Livio; Houssami, Nehmat
Published 2018
We previously reported the Screening with tomosynthesis or standard mammography-2 (STORM-2) trial, showing that tomosynthesis (3D-mammography) screening detected more cancers than 2D-mammography in double-reading practice. ...

The impact of legislation mandating breast density notification – Review of the evidence

Houssami, Nehmat; Lee, Christoph I
Published 2018
Breast density (BD) is an independent risk factor for breast cancer and reduces the sensitivity of mammography. The enactment of BD legislation in a majority of states in the USA mandating notification of risks associated ...

Artificial intelligence for breast cancer screening: Opportunity or hype?

Houssami, Nehmat; Lee, Christoph I; Buist, Diana S.M; Tao, Dacheng
Published 2017
Interpretation of mammography for breast cancer (BC) screening can confer a mortality benefit through early BC detection, can miss a cancer that is present or fast growing, or can result in false-positives. Efforts to ...

Rapid review: Estimates of incremental breast cancer detection from tomosynthesis (3D-mammography) screening in women with dense breasts.

Houssami, Nehmat; Turner, Robin M
Published 2016
High breast tissue density increases breast cancer (BC) risk, and the risk of an interval BC in mammography screening. Density-tailored screening has mostly used adjunct imaging to screen women with dense breasts, however, ...

Accuracy of screening women at familial risk of breast cancer without a known gene mutation: Individual patient data meta-analysis.

Phi, Xuan-Anh; Houssami, Nehmat; Hooning, Maartje J.; Riedl, Christopher; Leach, Martin O; Sardanelli, Francesco; Warner, Ellen; Trop, Isabelle; Saadatmand, Sepideh; Tilanus-Linthorst, Madeleine M.A.; Helbich, Thomas H; van den Heuvel, Edwin R; Koning, Harry J; Obdeijn, Inge-Marie; de Bock, Geertruida H.
Published 2017
Women with a strong family history of breast cancer (BC) and without a known gene mutation have an increased risk of developing BC. We aimed to investigate the accuracy of screening using annual mammography with or without ...

Breast cancers detected in only one of two arms of a tomosynthesis (3D-mammography) population screening trial (STORM-2)

Bernardi, Daniela; Houssami, Nehmat
Published 2017
The prospective ‘screening with tomosynthesis or standard mammography-2 (STORM-2)’ trial compared mammography screen-reading strategies and showed that each of integrated 2D/3D-mammography or 2Dsynthetic/3D-mammography ...

Radiation dose with digital breast tomosynthesis compared to digital mammography: per-view analysis.

Gennaro, Gisella; Bernardi, D; Houssami, Nehmat
Published 2018
The objective of this study was to compare radiation dose delivered by digital mammography (FFDM) and breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for a single view. 4,780 FFDM and 4,798 DBT images from 1,208 women enrolled in a screening ...

A randomized controlled trial of digital breast tomosynthesis versus digital mammography in population-based screening in Bergen: interim analysis of performance indicators from the To-Be trial

Aase, Hildegunn S; Holen, Asne S; Pedersen, Kristin; Houssami, Nehmat; Haldorsen, Ingfrid S; Sebuodegard, Sofie; Hanestad, Berit; Hofvind, Solveig
Published 2019
The aim of this paper was to describe a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of digital breast tomosynthesis including synthesized two-dimensional mammograms (DBT) versus digital mammography (DM) in a population-based screening ...

Mammographic sensitivity as a function of tumor size: A novelestimation based on population-based screening data.

Wang, Jing; Gottschal, Pam; Ding, Lilu; van Veldhuizen, Danielle W. A; Lu, Wenli; Houssami, Nehmat; Greuter, Marcel J. W.; de Bock, Geertruida H.
Published 2021
Instead of a single value for mammographic sensitivity, a sensitivity function based on tumor size more realistically reflects mammography’s detection capability. Because previous models may have overestimated size-specific ...

Published 2016
Purpose Debate on adjunct screening in women with dense breasts has followed legislation requiring that women be informed about their mammographic density and related adjunct imaging. Ultrasound or tomosynthesis can detect ...
