The thesis analyses a tripartite response: Australia’s anxiety that a foreign power would establish itself close to its northern coastline, a recently unified Germany’s attempt to create a colonial empire on Australia’s doorstep and the British government’s perplexed reaction. The thesis argues that instead of the fallout from the Annexation Crisis defining Australian-German relations for decades to come, it was largely forgotten.
