So when something doesn't fit anymore, we architects have the ability and responsibility to make sure that our cities don't force us to adapt to outdated leftovers from the past, but actually fit to the way we want to live. --Bjarke Ingels

The design approach I have taken for this project to design a theatre of anatomy in the city of Prague was to create a built form that responds to the pattern of the city. Through site analysis I have particularly focused on the dominance of positive space over the negative space. I have responded to this by inverting this dominance in a way to break the pattern to create a spatial quality that Prague has the potential to achieve within their heavy boundaries, interior facade of the church walls become outside and vice versa.

The concept is to really relate to the theatre and its function. I focused on explore different ways of perceiving the process of anatomy in the theatre. There’s 6 ways of viewing the anatomy and each of these actions has its own spatial relations and restrictions to the stage respectively. Hence, 6 set of rooms and space are designed and coordinated in the interior space of the existing church. The design process is to have a play with these 6 different spaces and coordinates them together within the theatre to help enhance the performance of the theatre. It gives more opportunities for viewers to select different ways of viewing and learning the process of anatomy by their own preferences.

A theatre of anatomy should allow the audience to consider their own body when watching the dissection of another. This scheme imposes the individual with the decision as to where and how their body moves through the theatre. The seating arrangements change from wide, exposed spaces to intense claustrophobic stalls - providing opportunity for the individual to take control of their experience. The ultimate intent is to encourage the audience to grasp an understanding of their own dimensions, and as a result, determine their level of “personal space”.

When we first got this project knowing that we are designing a theatre in a church and moreover, it's an anatomy theatre, my reaction was awkwardness. In my knowledge, anatomy theatre and church just don't belong to one catalogue. They are more like contradicted. Church sometimes may represent death but most of time, it gives hope and life, on the other hand, anatomy theatre is all about dealing with death, and dissecting cadavers. So this contradiction is where I started to dig into design.

My concept is to cut the building in to slices like a dissection. People walk around this building seemingly like a journey of visiting the dissection of the building. The inside walls are expanding outwards, some are pushed inwards, also the wall cut out of the roof represent the dissected of the church.

Influenced by the Renaissance concept of a three-day autopsy performance and by Prague’s strong historical connection with the advancement of the sciences, this project retains the high cultural significance of St Anna’s in Prague while transforming it into into an experiential learning space. The design allows for immersion in the programme of an autopsy, lectures, discussion and reflection time as a catalyst for seeking a deeper understanding of what it is to be human. The autopsy will be carried out using a Virtual Autopsy Table, building a 3D recreation of the human form to enable participants to follow the process.
