Help in using this site
The most important thing to know about using the Library web site is that you may use many web sites which are linked to the Library web site.
This is because many of the resources the Library subscribes to, such as electronic journals, are not stored locally, but on publishers' web sites.
The Library does not have any control over these external sites, but we are happy to pass on suggestions for improvement.
Web site arrangement
This web site is divided into 8 major sections.
- About the Library - covers facilities in the libraries, information on collections, ordering material for the collections, feedback options and what's new.
- Borrowing - covers information about library cards, borrowing rules and penalties, borrowing from other libraries, holds and renewals. It also provides links to services such as paying your fines over the Internet, requesting InterLibrary loans and Document delivery articles, and other self services options from the catalogue.
- Catalogue - the Library catalogue contains records about all items in the Library's collections, including printed material such as books, journals, music scores
- Databases and electronic resources - a lot of the Library's collections are now in electronic form. This includes indexes to journals, full text of journal articles, as well as our full text initiatives such as SETIS.
- Libraries - there are many libraries in the University of Sydney Library system. Most libraries have a subject focus and some provide specialised services for the Faculties they serve.
- Subject guides - Our Faculty Liaison Librarians have subject specialisations and they have prepared guides to help you when starting in a new subject area. The guides list useful Library resources, web sites, and databases.
- Information skills - with all these electronic resources, and complex systems, the Library can be a daunting place. But the Library also provides assistance and advice in using its services and resources. Just like asking the person at the Information Desk, when using the web site you can Ask A Librarian, which is an email service. There are also formal classes in using the catalogue and its electronic resources.
Web page layout
Every page in the Library web site has standard navigation to help you move to the information and services you want.
The Library logo is a link back to the Library home page. There is also a Home link at the top right of each page.
'Site map' gives an overview of all information, resources and services on the site.
'Contact Us' section provides contact details for our library staff and libraries.
'Search' enables you to search for information on the Library web pages. Links to how to search the Internet effectively, how to search the Library catalogue, and how to search databases is also available.
