This paper attempts to measure an important component of the research output of econometrics and economics departments, namely, the number of pages published, during the period 1988-93, in journals listed by the Journal of Economic Literature. Based on standardized page counts it is found that econometrics and economics department rankings are similar over a broad range of journal groupings. It is also found that the median number of pages published by senior lecturers, associate professors is quite small indicating research output is highly concentrated. This paper attempts to measure an important component of the research output of econometrics and economics departments, namely, the number of pages published, during the period 1988-93, in journals listed by the Journal of Economic Literature.
