This report is the 39th book in the General practice series from the Bettering the Evaluation of Care and Health (BEACH) program. It includes summary results from the most recent 10 years of the program, from 2005–06 to 2014–15 inclusive.
This report highlights changes in general practice activity over the most recent decade (April 2005 to March 2015) measured by the University of Sydney’s BEACH program, a continuous study of general practice activity in Australia. Over this time, 9,773 general practitioners (GPs) provided details of 977,300 GP–patient encounters. The report highlights changes over the decade in the characteristics of GPs and the patients they see, the problems managed, and the treatments provided. Changes in prevalence of measured risk factors (overweight, obesity, smoking and at-risk alcohol use) are described for subsamples of more than 30,000 adult patients each year. Changes in the prevalence of overweight and obesity over the decade are also described for annual subsamples of more than 2,500 children aged 2–17 years

This is the 17th annual report and the 38th book in the General Practice Series from the BEACH (Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health) program, a continuous national study of general practice activity in Australia.
This book provides a summary of results from the 17th year of the University of Sydney’s BEACH program, a continuous national study of general practice activity in Australia. From April 2014 to March 2015, 995 general practitioners (GPs) recorded details of 99,500 GP–patient encounters, at which patients presented 151,636 reasons for encounter and 153,133 problems were managed. For an ‘average’ 100 problems managed, GPs recorded 66 medications (including 55 prescribed, 5 supplied to the patient and 6 advised for over-the-counter purchase), 11 procedures, 22 clinical treatments (advice and counselling), 6 referrals to specialists and 3 to allied health services, 30 orders for pathology tests and 7 for imaging tests. A subsample study of measured risk factors in more than 31,000 patients suggests that in the adult (18 years and over) population who attended general practice at least once in 2014–15 the prevalence of obesity was 27%, overweight was 34%, daily smoking was 17%, and at-risk alcohol consumption was 26%. One in four people in the attending population had at least two of these risk factors. This book also contains a feature chapter examining changes in the care of older people (aged 65 years or more) in general practice over the 15 years 2000–01 to 2014–15.

A decade of Australian general practice activity 2001–02 to 2010–11

A decade of Australian general practice activity 2001–02 to 2010–11
Britt, Helena; Miller, Graeme C; Charles, Janice; Henderson, Joan; Bayram, Clare; Valenti, Lisa; Harrison, Christopher; Pan, Ying; Gordon, Julie; Zhang, Carmen; Chambers, Timothy; Fahridin, Salma
This book brings 10 years of data together from the BEACH (Bettering the Evaluation and Care of Health) program, to identify changes that have occurred over the decade 2001–02 to 2010–11 in the characteristics of GPs and the patients they see, the problems they manage and the treatments they provide.
BEACH is a continuous cross-sectional national study that began in April 1998. Every year each of about 1,000 randomly selected GPs records details of 100 consecutive encounters on structured paper recording forms, and provides information about themselves and their practice. BEACH is the only continuous randomised study of general practice activity in the world, and the only national program that provides direct linkage of management (such as prescriptions, referrals, investigations) to the problem under management.
